7. | Immeasurably Dreary | 07:05 | Show lyrics |
Out of the formless stream ...of sad horrible sounds, Heartless and miserable. The night was railing against ...the morning of which it was bereaved. The cold cursed the warmth ...for which it hungered. Chilled to the marrow. Dread heart incantation. Cold be hand, heart and bone. Cold be sleep under stone. Nevermore to wake on stony bed. Never, till the sun fails and moon is dead. In the black wind the stars shall die, Over dead sea and withered land lie. Dead in stone. Withered in blackened barrow. Immeasurably Dreary is directly inspired from the curses of J.R.R.T. of which many find similar interest. Most interesting in his Oeuvre is the specific example above, of which also forms the nexus of the folk drone, Heartless and Miserable. |

Psalm of Misery is deeply inspired by the writings of Georges Bataille, of which forms the nucleus of this project. In particular, reference to his writings around the formation of L’Acephale in the 1930’s forms the crux of this piece. |

A Burned Village is a cover of a song by Sadastor from their ultra limited cassette Herald of Confusion. The sheer brilliance of this release and complete outsider influenced Black Metal provided immense inspiration for creating both Hail and L’Acéphale. This song in particular with its militaristic drums and blackened guitar riffs compelled me to create similar audial assassinations. A Burned Village In a burned village, The Runes In a dark village, We burn In a dark village, We are born. I’ll wear my cross like a sword I’ll kiss your dagger like a king I’ll wear my cross like a sword [Unleash your dagger, and attain] This is why the runes are so old This is why we read the runes. |

1. | Stahlhartes Gehäuse | 18:43 | Show lyrics |
The title of this piece is based on the writings of Max Weber, a German philosopher and seminal sociologist. In his English translation of Weber’s “The Protestant Ethic & the Spirit of Capitalism”, Talcott Parsons turned this curious couplet of words into a landmark statement of the human condition. The “iron cage” as he phrased it is an indictment of the modern era, where rationalization causes a series of effects that become a prison which further and further enslaves us. Rationalization is the development of social actions and interactions that are based on efficiency or calculation rather than being motivated by custom, emotion or tradition. Weber saw this as a movement in part of society’s emancipation of magic, a disenchantment of the world. Here a specific critique of Europe, but the effects of rationalization and modern capitalization as a driving force behind global colonialization and as the basis of a global economy have particular significance. This Protestant-influenced “spirit of capitalism” which Weber saw not as a Marxist concept, where economics were the basis of all human institutions including religion, but that the religious movement shaped the direction of economic thought and beliefs which fueled current modern economics which is mechanistic and based on rationalism. Modern capitalism grew out of a religious pursuit of wealth, where wealth was a sign of spiritual fulfillment characterized by the thoughts of American novelist Walker Percy, “As long as I am getting rich, I feel good. It is my Presbyterian blood.” Yet this pursuit of wealth, eventually led to the pursuit itself as a rational means of existence, the rational ends outgrew and became unreliant on the underlying religious movement behind it, leaving only rational capitalism. This increasing rationalization of society regardless of tradition or custom in a disenchanted world leads to what Weber called “polar night of icy darkness.” In a shatteringly prescient passage Weber states, “The Puritan wanted to work in calling; we are forced to do so. For when asceticism was carried out of monastic cells into everyday life, and began to dominate worldly morality, it did its part in building the tremendous cosmos of the modern economic order. This order is now bound to the technical and economic conditions of machine production which today determine the lives of all the individuals who are born into this mechanism, not only those directly concerned with economic acquisition, with economic force. Perhaps it will so determine them until the last ton of fossilized coal is burnt.” (Page 181, 1953 Scribner’s edition) Rationality fuels modernity, modernization has as its core rationality with its efficiency regardless of motivation, this fuels behaviors in the capitalist market and the rational administration of the state and bureaucracy where efficiency is preeminent and necessitates further compartmentalizing. This compartmentalizing and mechanization becomes our prison. Disenchanted and slaves to efficiency and production for fulfillment severed from any spiritual component tends toward dehumanization and exploitation. It fosters the raping of the earth and its resources and forces life outside of a balance with nature. An iron cage, a life cased in steel, a polar night of icy darkness. For this inception of our delving into this concept, we have explored various sympathetic materials. Since the world is intertwined and interdependent, we often find that many things correlate between various traditions. Here we piece together seemingly disparate narratives into a larger movement on the subject matter of Herr Weber. We gather these elements for the distinct purpose of creating associations and interweaving metaphors across dialogues. This is borne through a series of movements housed under the title of Stahlhartes Gehäuse. A song of many parts, De petrecut, The Curse Upon Iron, Stahlhartes Gehäuse, Klage II, and Mă uitai spre răsărit. I. De petrecut [“To Spend”] “De petrecut” is a Romanian ritual funeral song to accompany the deceased as they transition into the other world. Stemming from the Borlovenii Vechi in Banat this selection of drone harmony which is sung on the way to the graveyard. Traditionally these songs are of directions for a safe journey. At certain prescribed moments, fey women sing other “laments” that beseech the sun not to rise till the dead person has all the food and drink they need for their journey “from the land of pity to the pitiless land,” or speak of planting and decorating a pine tree at the head of the grave. These chants are what survive from an archaic oral tradition. Here we lament the death of modern civilization in the grips of the stranglehold of rationality. Fire, fire, trandafire Dar tu ce te-ai zăbovit Și n-ai inflorit? Bud, Bud, Rosebud Why did you wait so long to bloom To bloom?... II. (Curse Upon Iron) Raua needmine “The Curse Upon Iron” or “Raua needmine” in the original Estonian; we fuse a magical hex conducted by Veljo Tormis into a martial drum piece. Here we strive to sever iron from its power over us and to regain our hold over it. The piece is based in shamanism and the ritual incantations of the Finnish Epic the Kalevala. Tormis notes that “in order to acquire power over a material or immaterial thing, one communicates knowledge to the object. Thus the describing and explaining of the birth of iron to iron itself forms a part of the shamanic process. The magical rite is performed to restrain the evil hiding inside iron. Each and every thing created by man may turn against man himself when used without respect toward the living.” Obey, villain! Wretched Iron! Wretched Iron! Cursed bog ore! You flesh eater, Gnawer of bones, You spiller of innocent blood! Wicked, how did you get power? Tell how you became so haughty! Damn, you, bastard! Wretched iron! I know your birth, you purblind fool, I know well your source, you evil! Once there walked three nature spirits, Three fiery daughters of the sky. They milked their swelling breast to earth, They squeezed their milk onto the fens. From the first maid spurted black iron, This turned into soft wrought iron. White milk squirted the second maid, This was the source of tempered steel. The third maid spouted blood-red milk, This gave birth to bog iron ore. Ohoy, villain! Wretched iron! Wretched Iron! Cursed bog ore! Then you were not high and mighty, Not yet mighty, not yet haughty, When you sloshed in swamps and marshes, When in bogholes you were trampled. Damn you, bastard! Wretched Iron! I know your birth, you purblind fool! I know well your source, you evil! A wolf then ran across the fen, A shambling bear walked in the moor. And the swamp rose from the wolf tracks, And the moor from under the bear’s paws. And there sprouted iron seedlings In traces of the wolf’s claws, In the hollows of the bear tracks. Ohoy, iron! Child of boghole! Swamp’s red rust and gentle smooth milk! Tell me, who made you so baleful! Who decreed your works mischief? Death was riding through the marshes, Plague was on a winter journey. Seedling steel it found in swampland, Rusty iron in a boghole. The great dead then began to talk, The killer plague then spoke and said; In a pine grove on a hillside, In a field behind the village, Far beyond the farmers’ granges, Right here will be the forge of death. Here I’ll build the forge’s furnace, Here I’ll place the widest bellows, Here I’ll start to boil the iron, Fan and blast the rust-red bog ore, Hammer anger into iron. Iron, poor man, shivered, trembled, Shivered, trembled, shuddered, quavered, When he heard fire being called by name, Heard the plea for wicked fire. Iron, poor man, shivered, trembled, Shivered, trembled, shuddered, quavered, When he heard fire being called by name, Heard the plea for wicked fire. Ohoy villain! Wretched iron! Then you were not high and mighty, Not yet mighty, not yet haughty, When you moaned in the white-hot furnace, Whined under beating hammers. Scolded the old man from upon the oven, The greybeard from the furnace roof. Iron stretches, like blubber, Spreads like saliva, Oozing from the blazing furnace, Flowing from the scorching fire. Iron, you’re still soft and gentle. How have you yet to be tempered To make steel from you? Saliva was brought from a viper, Venom from a black snake! For iron wouldn’t harbor evil Without saliva from vipers, Without venom from black snakes. Ohoy, villain! Evil iron! Blade of the sword, mother of war! Boghole ore’s golden shield, You, steel, of vile breed! Damn you, bastard! Wretched iron! We are kinsmen, of the same breed, Of the same seed we have sprouted, You are earth-born, I am earth-born, We are both black soil. For we both live on the same earth And in that earth we two will merge. Then there will be land enough for both. III. Stahlhartes Gehäuse “Stahlhartes Gehäuse”, the third piece in this movement, is a three-part song. Here the Curse, this Hex incanted upon Iron, is placed into a larger construct, that which is the basis for Max Weber’s theory. We pull the various threads of the phrase apart and regain a foothold on their implications. Break its spell by casting our own by naming it and recounting to itself its properties. This is intersected midway through by a break in which a poem from the great Austrian poet Georg Trakl is recited. “Klage II” or “Lament II” is a sympathetic allusion to the plight of humankind at this intersection, in the stranglehold of this prison, this ‘light cloak’ to be shed at a moment’s notice is our guillotine. We are the crimson body dashed on horrid reefs. Knife like life Cased in steel This life under duress Drenched in axiom Steel hard casing These prison walls enclosing Housed in unrelenting demand Coffins engulfed in flame Stahlhartes Gehäuse Shackled, enslaved, steel cage Steel graves, death embrace Condemned and damned to lie Pressed within an iron cage This light cloak no more This harsh razor existence This harsh razor existence Coffins nailed in place Gutted, embalmed, euthanized. Coffins nailed in place Gutted, embalmed, euthanized (+ Klages II +) Flammende Gräber Leichen im Stahl Nie Atmen Wieder in der Schwärze Geopfert (Flaming Graves Corpses in Steel Never Breathing Again in Darkness Sacrificed) - Coffins Aflame! - IV. Klage II [Lament II] “Klage II” or “Lament II” is a poem by the great Austrian poet Georg Trakl (1887-1914) chosen by Markus Wolff as fitting allusion to Weber’s theory. It is one of the last poems he wrote before taking his own life, while in the military working as a doctor caring for the wounded and dying on the front in WWI. (Sleep and Death, the gloomy eagles, Whirr all night about this head: The icy wave of Eternity May devour the golden image of man. On horrid reefs the crimson body is dashed And the dark voice laments over the sea. Sister of stormy melancholy, Look, a tremendous boat is sinking beneath the stars To the mute countenance of night.) V. Mă uitai spre răsărit [I Looked Toward the Rising Sun] “Mă uitai spre răsărit”, the final movement, is translated as “I looked toward the rising sun.” Here at the end of this journey we beseech the sun to return and greet it with optimism and nostalgia. A doniă from Leleși, Gorj sung by the queen of doniă singers the Oltenian Gypsy Maria Lătărețu. Foaie verde mărgărit, Mă uitai spre Răsărit, Văzui primăvara viind. Eu cunos’ vara când vine Pă fluturi și pă albine, Pă frunza dă mărăcine, Pă cântatul cucului, Pe hăitul plugului. Primăvara când sosește Neica la plug îmi hăiește, Mândra la pânză înălbește, Cine-i om atunci trăiește, Și ce-i place tot iubește. (Green leaf of the daisy I looked toward the sun I saw springtime coming I know summer when it comes By the butterflies and bees By the leaf of common hawthorn By the singing of the cuckoo By the hoys of the plowman As the spring arrives The young man gets ready to plow His sweetheart starts bleaching the cloth It’s then that a bold man really lives And makes love to every girl that pleases him) |

2. | Psalm of Misery | 12:05 | Show lyrics |
Psalm of Misery is deeply inspired by the writings of Georges Bataille (1897-1962), from which this project derives its name. In particular, his writing around the time that he, along with a fellow cadre of co-conspirators, initiated the journal and secret society, Acephale. These writings exhibit a particular sense of loss for those societal elements that were abandoned within the quest for Modernity that we share. Instead, what we now face is quantity over quality, a sterile religious belief system “uncorrupted” by the more base elements of society and rationality drenched in blind obedience. To this misery we say, “Slit the throat of man.” Psalm of Misery Misery Knot the noose of the hanged man Melancholy gripping the throat The night reaches out To choke the haunted castle of memory This psalm of misery Tongue heavy with coffins The black wings of the grave Grown decrepit with rage This psalm of misery Our dead mouths sing Seizing the throat This psalm of misery The world’s eyes are blind skies Black sun in an impenetrable night The hard stupidity of man Will greet the law of the knife Night falls within us Verbannt, vergessen und gefesselt Die Klinge berührt die zuckende Zunge Stählerne Gräber bergen gläserne Wut Die eisige Stirn fühlt die gleissende Glut. (Vanished and bound, and forgotten The blade touches the twitching tongue. Steel graves conceal vitreous rage The ice cold forehead feels the luminous blaze.) You will bite the horrible sun You will pay for your share of hate Cast the lime on our open graves Slit the throat of man. Psalm of Misery |

3. | Perdition | 24:42 | Show lyrics |
Perdition is strongly based on the written oeuvre of Georg Trakl. His poetry, steeped in passion and transcendence, is highly recommended. Here we look at the human condition, being drawn into our pyre, looking out over our graves: need this execution be our extinction? Shall we choose this perdition at our feet? Night quietly falls into our burial urns. Perdition Mankind drawn within the jaws of fire A roll of drums Blood red Eucharist Ravens plash in gory gutters Carrion scented funeral procession. Perdition Bells tolling the flight of murder Black birds lament from barren branches Night falls into burial urns An empty grave languid with death How dark this endless night Against a countenance of crimson flame Blood red wound, a darkened chamber Sweet breath of decay Perdition Bells tolling the flight of murder Black birds lament from barren branches Night falls into burial urns Black dew drips from barren willows Black blood runs from the throat At our feet, the graves of the dead Open to our future, our perdition. (Filled with festering sighs Facing our open graves) |

1. | Mania - Fertility Fucked | 09:14 | Show lyrics |
Life objectified, raped, commodified; put into the light to sell to lonely starving eyes. The precious fertile flower put into a vice. Factory cage inseminate with artificial life. Self-negating virtues pound into their mind. Easier to give in than to fight a sea of lies. Destroy the true beauty, make the body hide; and almost nothing’s left of what’s originally inside. Everything’s so fucked now, no chance of going back. The mothers don’t remember the love that they finally lack. Feminism rises, a response to where we’re at; A hardened shell distorted by the hate they’re fighting back. Striving just to live, we feed our primal wants. A screen of empty meaning only makes us more distraught. Desperately trying to continue holding on. Stripped and ripped away by the eternal leviathan. Fertility fucked by the sea of hatred, enslavement, and disharmony. Eternally seeking the key, we blindly go on and we’ll never be free. |

1. | November Song | 25:50 | Show lyrics |
It was in the forest, The silence and the secret Of a many-rayed star. Far off, at the edge of the woods On the path, That low trees Cover in an arch, A child passed Lost. Frightened, astonished to see me As I saw him, Encased in a sphere of snowflakes Whirlwinds approached us, As though to deceive us. A violet inactive sun And the faint light of a storm Froze us in terror. The fairies and ogres disputing our shared anguish Wanted lighting to uproot a large tree. Not far from there, Which opened, Like a stomach. I wailed. The child, bare legs streaked with cold And very real cowl Reopened his eyes At the sight of me, he ran away. Giving up on following him Picking a strange destiny out of the rut, very logical all in all I turned around and went back “as though nothing had happened” but I felt at my shoulder, that heavy discreet rustle of a black-winged bird and examining it with pleasure I wanted it to accompany me everywhere and Always precede me Like a herald his knight. More and more lost, Stumbling against rocks Slipping on dead leaves, Sinking into the mud of a pond I came upon an abandoned house, A well of moss and verdigris A smashed-in doorway... I entered. The flowered and moldy wallpaper, Undulated in waves Toward a rotten floorboard A gaping fireplace Displayed the still intact vestiges of an extinguished fire Ashes, bones charred by ash and birch I pushed open the doors without hinges Whose fall terrified me... I opened windows without panes As though I needed air. Finally… I climbed a implausible staircase The walls, covered in strange runes... Never seen Laid my life bare. With my name written out ...and associated with crimes: “What right did they have? The right of the poor.” In this filthy attic, The bird came back to me With its cry, To thrash the living With its beak, To dismember the dead The dark shadow cast over me, Seemed to elect a prey The night found me strangled deep in the woods It enveloped me in a halo of moon And rocked me in mist. A white, shifting, icy mist: “I know your star, go follow it This nameless being Renounced in turn By night and day. Can do nothing against you Believe me... When tomorrow at dawn Your head is thrown Into the basket of the guillotined Remember Murderer, That you alone Have drunk ‘all the milk of human kindness’ from my breast.” (Lyrics by ‘Laure’ Colette Peignot, translated by Jeanine Herman, published by City Lights Books, 1995) |

Hark! The battle-cry is ringing! Hope within our bosoms springing, Bids us journey forward, singing — Death to tyrants’ might! Tho’ we wield not spear nor sabre, We the sturdy sons of Labor, Helping every man his neighbor, Shirk not from the fight! See our homes before us; Wives and babes implore us; So firm we stand in heart and hand, And swell the dauntless. Men of Labor, young or hoary, Would ye win a name in story? Strike for home, for life, for glory! Justice, Freedom, Right! (Lyrics by Henry Stephens Salt) |

Drawn towards these lands again Seeking death and sacred soil I ride the longing winds of my blackened soul Growing stronger once I enter my empire beyond Emperium Behold my coming The full moon rise above me Enlightening my realm in a silvery glow Yet the shadows crawl beneath my storming sky Guarding treasures from forbidden light I still remember, though ages ago it seems The first time I entered the gates The revelation of ritual death By which I became divine Sacrifice of the life I had among the flesh of light And now I enter again Even stronger, yet amazed by what I see In ecstasy I mock the world Suddenly I memorize Asking what I left behind Nothing Can I ever comprehend? Will my longing ever end? Never Drawn towards these lands again Seeking death and sacred soil I ride the longing winds of my blackened soul Eternally Composed by Ihsahn (Vegard Sverre Tveitan), Samoth (Thomas Thormodsæter Haugen), and Euronymous (Øystein Aarseth). The dissection of time, Meat décor, Exorcism in blood. The Carving of forbidden words on clean flesh pages. There floats a phantom of the slum’s foul air, Shaping to eyes which have the gift of seeing, Into the spectre of that loathy lair, Red handed, ruthless, furtive, unerect, ‘tis murderous crime. The blood-dimmed tide is loosed Gods and beasts, that is what our world is made of. What is the Fourth Dimension? There is a tunnel There is a movement out of dark and into brilliance. Light, Ecstasy, the Sun. I hover on the brink of form, inchoate and ethereal, filled with a fierce exultant joy A pelting thunderhead of murder Below the skin of history are London’s veins that pulse and glisten with significance. I am that energy that meaning. I am fire. Some force ahead draws me on, a massive power that calls to me. An invisible curve rising through the centuries. I rise up hungry through the night towards a naked moon. Set free from flesh, a fearful stat in mankind’s inner firmament. Up. Up out of the lunar and unconscious sphere where are both masterpiece and murder, Up towards a higher light. Cold stone sips it’s offering. Steam lifts from off the blood into chill air. I am rising. I can feel the tug of my ascension; My becoming. I go up into the sacred. I go up into the gold. Where they wait for me. Oh, Sweet masters. Masters I come among you. Up into the sheer brilliance, The gold I am that energy, that meaning. Up into the sacred Into the gold The sheer brilliance I am that energy I am fire. |

............ A dull bleak glare envelopes field and pond The sun dies in the shadow realm. The way is far and the air is silent, Not a single voice is heard. Forest decays into swamp and mud, Vines choke trunk after trunk. White fog billows and blazes The lunar sphere rises, a red, looming disc. Flood turns to ice and straight to crooked Blood turns to lead and the word falls silent. Nothing is ours, nothing is warm Birds flee, swarm after swarm. Towards the moon, their steep course ascends, Their screeching flight erratic and convulsive. Flapping wings crash into bog and grave, Feet clawing at the air. .................... |

Misery Knot the noose of the hanged man Melancholy gripping the throat The night reaches out To choke the haunted castle of memory This psalm of misery Tongue heavy with coffins The black wings of the grave Grown decrepit with rage This psalm of misery Our dead mouths sing Seizing the throat This psalm of misery The world’s eyes are blind skies Black sun in an impenetrable night The hard stupidity of man Will greet the law of the knife Night falls within us You will bite the horrible sun You will pay for your share of hate Cast the lime on our open graves Slit the throat of man. Psalm of Misery is deeply inspired by the writings of Georges Bataille, of which forms the nucleus of this project. In particular, reference to his writings around the formation of L’Acephale in the 1930’s forms the crux of this piece. |

The Book of Lies is directly attributable to the text of Aleister Crowley of whose work, similarly titled, is the basis for the ideas presented herein. Recommendations are thusly assigned to this Tome for further illumination or A-llumination. The Book of Lies Daggers held aloft Above the heart of earth underneath Thought is disease Depraved and debauched To beget is to die The broken manifests light Cast the seed into the field of night Nature is Cruel Existence is Eternal Warfare The swollen mask mutters an Atheist’s prayers Sleep with faith and wake a corpse Slaves of reason Blind under the dominion of reason In the coffin of our hopes Death still lurks Sealed in the tomb of the slain Nature is Cruel Existence is Eternal Warfare To Each His Own: I do not like your Dark Church! I prefer the bright shining sun! And my own women are a thousand times more dear to me Than your painted Madonna. And the son that my wife has given me Is a thousand times more dear to me Than your gilded crucifix, With contorted arms and legs. Overall, I do not like what is alien to this world What is cold, wilted and lifeless. I love life, and joy and light And the blood, surging and red. Seventh Gate This extinction Poised at sunset Hark as we Approach This the final gate Slaughtered in plague And Infection Poised to collapse Breathe this poison Wither in this dusk Malign collapse We usher in malevolence Locust swarm The moon becomes as blood And eclipses the sun We draw blades And sound the horns Drenched in murder We open the gates On this final day Wolves howl Man engulfed in flames Vultures descend Black scorched violence Filth scream vomiting |

Schlaf und Tod, die düsteren Adler Umrauschen nachtlang dieses Haupt: Des Menschen goldnes Bildnis Verschlänge die eisige Woge der Ewigkeit.

You will bite the horrible sun You will pay for your share of hate Cast the lime on our open graves Slit the throat of man.

The rock laments in the shade Of gorges damp and cold Rivulets tumble down And break upon the stones Glittering like a crown With gemstones red and brown The traveler hears their call And sees the waters fall Come, Ye spirits bold In glory as of old And gather from the deep Those who lie in sleep Command the hearts and minds of all Who crave the solace of your glance And through your mystic will enhance The joy of those who heed your call… Runenberg What lies at the heart of man… Runenberg Sun sinking in the west Dusk stole over ground Disconsolate and deep in thought Stars beckoning thither A dark swelling sea The call of Runenberg …Runenberg… |

…………. With warm hands I die, you die where is he where am I without laughter I am dead dead and dead in the pitch-black night arrow shot at him. ………. ............
